回音寶寶 於 2018-11-14 01:56 寫道: Short positions in cannabis sector hit record high Short sellers continue their bets against the cannabis sector, with the dollar value of the negative wager on pot stocks reaching an all-time high late last week. Data from IHS Markit showed nearly US$3.32-billion in short positions at the market close Thursday and US$3.30-billion Friday in the group of 45 cannabis companies the firm is monitoring. While the value of the short positions had topped US$3-billion a handful of times before, the Thursday and Friday totals were more than US$200-million greater than on any previous day. The value of the short position in Canopy Growth Corp. topped US$1-billion Friday for the first time. In terms of the percentage of outstanding shares shorted, the 2.9 per cent figure Thursday and 2.8 per cent Friday remained below the highs exceeding 4 per cent, set earlier this year. “Generally speaking, short sellers responded to the October sell-off by adding to positions, which the subsequent rally have made even larger,” said Samuel Pierson, director of securities finance at IHS Markit. Short-sellers profit when stock fall by borrowing shares, selling them, and planning on repaying the loan with shares bought at a new, lower price. When shares rise, instead, shorts lose money. And if the increase is rapid, they may have to “cover” their position by buying, sending the stock higher in what’s known as a “short squeeze.” Canopy Growth Corp. and Aphria Inc. have seen sharp increases in their negative bets since Oct. 1, with the number of shares shorted rising 110 per cent and 91 per cent, respectively. Tilray Inc. and Aurora Cannabis Inc. saw increases of 37 per cent and 38 per cent, respectively. Among smaller names, MedMen Enterprises Inc. saw a 297 per cent jump in shares shorted since Oct. 1. A number of companies with small share counts saw short positions decline. An example: The Supreme Cannabis Co.
