Actually the unrest in Hong Kong is very good for the Chinese government and Party Central, because it helps to reinforce their message that western-supported freedom and democracy are just a plot to destabilize China, and make China poor, weak and divided again, just as it was pre-1949, before the founding of the People¡¯s Republic and New China, and before the Chinese Communist Party came to rule China and made it strong and united again.
From Party Central¡¯s point of view, the longer the HK unrest lasts, the more help it brings in educating Chinese about western tactics to make China weak again. For many Chinese, this parallels the Opium Wars, when the western powers forced China to open up on western, not Chinese, terms and ushered in the Century of Humiliation. Moreover, there is no chance that the HK unrest will spill over into China because Chinese who side with the west would be seen and treated as traitors by almost all Chinese.
Before, many Chinese felt that the Chinese official media lied to them. Now, with the HK unrest, many have come around to the view that the Chinese government was telling them the truth all along. The end result is that now Chinese are more nationalist than ever.
Hong Kong¡¯s tragedy is that it is in everyone¡¯s interest to burn it to the ground.

For the US: It shows that China does not care about the people of Hong Kong and their call for freedom and democracy;
For Joshua Wong: It makes him Jesus for Hong Kong freedom and democracy;
For China: It shows that western powers will stop at nothing to stop China¡¯s increasing influence on the world stage;
For Donald Trump: Hong Kong burning shifts US domestic attention away from impeachment, and to make Americans aware of the China threat;
For US Republicans: It makes their base rally around Trump and Republicans in the elections;
For US Democrats: It makes Americans aware of the China threat;
For Hong Kong rioters: ¡°I just like to watch things burn.¡±
