Vision Vancouver mayoral candidate Gregor Robertson is suggesting a new tactic to increase the stock of rental housing in Vancouver.
On Monday morning, Robertson said in an interview on CBC Radio that the city could make the owners of Vancouver's 18,000 vacant condo units pay business property taxes, rather than residential property taxes.
"They are investments, they're not residences," he told Ian Hanomansing on The Early Edition.
"I think if we're taxing them like businesses...then we'll have more of those rented out to avoid that business tax, and we'll have a pool of rental housing that we can generate from that."
