It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mr.Weiping Jiang, a renowned journalist, poet, and calligrapher, who left us suddenly on June 4, 2025, at the age of 70, due to a cerebral hemorrhage at his home in Toronto. His extraordinary life was defined by an unrelenting pursuit of truth, a profound love for the arts, and an enduring commitment to justice. Mr.Weiping Jiang was born on October 5, 1955, in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China, where his early gifts in writing and artistic expression began to shine. After earning a degree in Chinese Literature from Liaoning University, he launched a distinguished career in journalism. Between 1995 and 2000, he served as the Chief Representative and Senior Journalist for the Northeast China bureau of Hong Kong¡¯s Wen Wei Po. During this time, his sharp investigative reporting earned him widespread acclaim. Starting in 1998, he published a series of groundbreaking articles in Hong Kong¡¯s Qianshao magazine, exposing corruption among senior officials in Northeast China, including the former mayor of Dalian and the former deputy mayor of Shenyang. His fearless journalism brought international attention to these issues and solidified his reputation as a champion of truth. His dedication to justice, however, came with significant personal sacrifice. In December 2002, Weiping Jiang was detained in secret by the Dalian State Security Bureau, accused of "providing state intelligence to foreign entities" and "inciting subversion of state power." He was sentenced to six years in prison and, following his release on January 3, 2006, endured three years of house arrest. In early 2009, he resettled in Canada, where he continued his work as a freelance writer and served as a visiting scholar at the University of Toronto, sharing his expertise with a new community. Mr.Weiping Jiang¡¯s contributions to journalism and human rights were celebrated worldwide. In 2001, he received the International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists for his steadfast defense of a free press. In 2004, Human Rights Watch honored him with the Hellman-Hammett Award in New York, recognizing his impact on human rights advocacy. In 2006, PEN Canada bestowed upon him the International Humanitarian Award, a testament to his global influence as a humanitarian and writer. Mr.Weiping Jiang was not only a professional trailblazer but also a devoted family man and a gifted artist. His poetry and calligraphy, infused with insight and grace, reflected his deep appreciation for beauty and humanity. These works stand as a lasting testament to his creative spirit and will continue to resonate with those who encounter them. He is survived by his cherished family, who provided him with unwavering love and strength throughout his journey. Weiping Jiang¡¯s kindness, integrity, and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. The loss of Mr.Weiping Jiang is deeply felt across the realms of journalism, literature, and human rights. His bravery in the face of adversity, his passion for justice, and his artistic legacy will inspire generations to come. We offer our heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends as they navigate this profound loss. May Mr.Weiping Jiang rest in peace, his memory forever honored. Rest in peace, Mr.Weiping Jiang.
