The Feast of Unleavened Bread
Following Passover, on the 14th at sunset, or the 15th at the beginning of the day, the Feast of Unleavened Bread officially begins. Israelites gather at home to eat roasted lamb with unleavened bread and bitter herbs, enjoying the Passover meal. From the 15th onwards, for seven consecutive days, the Israelites must remove all leavened food from their homes and eat only unleavened bread. The Bible says, Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover. (Luke 22:1, ESV). This is because the two festivals are consecutive, and thus they are commemorated together.
Old leaven represents filth and corruption, causing the dough to rise, symbolizing the influence of sin; therefore, the Feast of Unleavened Bread emphasizes "being set apart" and "inner purity." The spiritual meaning of the Feast of Unleavened Bread is that the era of the Old Testament Law has passed, because no one could keep the Law. The Lord Jesus established a new covenant with us, enabling us to be justified through faith in Jesus. The Bible says, "we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ" (Galatians 2:16, ESV). In the New Testament, the Passover meal involves eating bread and drinking the cup, receiving the Lord's Supper. The Bible says, "Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed." (1 Corinthians 5:7, ESV). The spiritual meaning of the Breaking of Bread and receiving the Lord's Supper:
(1) Holding fast to the truth of the bread and cup until the Lord's return
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.”(Matthew 26:26-28, ESV)
In the New Testament, God's children eat unleavened bread when receiving the Lord's Supper; after thanksgiving, the bread and cup represent the flesh and blood of the Lord. Brothers and sisters, receiving the Lord's Supper on Sundays should not be taken lightly! Do not mistakenly believe that the bread and cup are merely symbols, not the true flesh and blood of the Lord. We must believe the Lord's word; eating the bread and drinking the cup by faith is eating the Lord's flesh and drinking the Lord's blood.
At the Last Supper, the Lord Jesus promised us that He would drink the new cup with us at the Lamb's wedding in the Kingdom of Heaven; therefore, we must not forsake our meetings, but hold fast to the truth of the bread and cup until the day Christ takes His bride.
(2) The Lord's flesh and blood are blood, water, and the Holy Spirit.
So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. (John 6:53-54, ESV)
"The Testimony of the Blood": Receiving the Lord's cup in the Lord's Supper is drinking the Lord's blood; this cup is His blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins (Matthew 26:2 . "The Testimony of Water": After thanksgiving, the bread in the Lord's Supper becomes the body of the Lord (the flesh of the Lord refers to the Word, and the Word is water; that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, – Ephesians 5:26).
"The Testimony of the Holy Spirit": This bread must be baked with fire, its spiritual meaning being the testimony of the Holy Spirit (the Lord baptizes us with the Holy Spirit and fire – Matthew 3:11).
(3) After receiving salvation, one should daily unleaven and live a holy life. Passover commemorates Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who became the lamb to be slain and died on the cross to save the world, accomplishing the complete Gospel of blood, water, and the Holy Spirit. Unleavened Bread follows closely behind, lasting seven days. These two are closely connected; it can be said that Unleavened Bread is a continuation of the salvation of Passover.
This means that after we believe in Jesus and receive salvation, it is not the end; but rather a continuous process of unleavening, daily renewal, living a godly and holy life. The Bible says, "Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. " (1 Corinthians 5:8, ESV)
