Christ (Yeshua) entered once for all into the holy places thus securing an eternal redemption
But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. (Hebrews 9:11-12, ESV)
1. Sacrifice
In the Old Testament, priests offered the blood of bulls and goats, which take away sins. (Hebrews 10:4, ESV). Bulls and goats are merely created beings; their blood could only "cover" sin ritually, not truly "remove" it.
Christ, the Son of God, became flesh and came to earth. His blood is spotless and pure; a single sacrifice was sufficient to cleanse all the sins of humanity from ancient times to the present. The Bible says, "how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God." (Hebrews 9:14, ESV)
2. Sacrifice
A. Location: A sanctuary made by human hands (shadow)
Frequency: Once a year (repetition, incomplete)
Result: Temporary cover over sin
B. The true sanctuary in heaven (substance)
Once for all time (complete, finished)
Eternal atonement, cleansing of conscience
3. The "Eternity" of the Priesthood
Old Testament priests were limited by death, thus requiring successive generations (Aaron's descendants).
This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life.
Christ become a priest after the order of Melchizedek. Although He died, He rose again and holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. (Hebrews 7:16). Jesus Christ (Yeshua) did not need to stand and serve daily like an earthly priest (symbolizing unfinished work), but when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God (Hebrews 10:12, ESV). This signifies that the great work of redemption was completely accomplished.
4. A One-Time Breakthrough: He Can Save All Who Come to God Through Him
Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them (Hebrews 7:25, ESV). The High Priest of the Old Testament had to leave the Holy of Holies after entering and return the following year; but Christ tore the veil, opened the way, and entered into the heavenly Holy of Holies, where He will forever intercede for us. This door will never be closed again.
5. We are sanctified through the once-for-all offering of Jesus Christ (Yeshua).
For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. (Hebrews 10:4, ESV)
And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (Hebrews 10:10, ESV)
6. God will strike the shepherd.
(1) God strikes the shepherd only once, and God's work is done.
‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’(Matthew 26:31, ESV)
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
he has put him to grief;
when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. (Isaiah 53:10, ESV)
Since Christ has already been struck (the punishment has already been carried out), a righteous God will not strike us a second time for the same sin.
When Israel was in the wilderness, the Rock was Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4, ESV). He only needed to be struck "once," and God's work was done!
(2) Moses' First Strike on the Rock
And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel; this was the first time Moses struck the rock (Exodus 17:5-6, ESV).
(3) Moses' Second Strike on the Rock
In Numbers 20:8-11, Take the staff, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water. So you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.” And Moses took the staff from before the Lord, as he commanded him. Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?”And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, and water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock; however, Moses, in anger, struck the rock a second time.
And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.” (Numbers 20:12, ESV).
