Those brokerage fees (and taxes) only apply on items that that customs has decided are over their $ limit (seems to range from $30-$70). I've had lots of packages with a declared value ~$10 delivered to me with no charge at all. You should know that customs may open the package and 'determine the value' all on their own, this can be bad for you because they can be very wrong; you do have the option of challenging that value.
дµÀ:
UPS Standard: cheap to ship, but extremely expensive once it's in the country - UPS charges a brokerage fee and I think a handling tax too. Whatever you do, do NOT use UPS Standard.
UPS Express or Expedited: pretty good - expensive, but it's quick and brokerage is free. When your package comes into the country, all you have to pay for is GST (and PST, depending on the province).
USPS Ground: Once it gets into the country it gets transferred to Xpresspost. They'll charge you $5 CAD brokerage fee plus GST/PST, where applicable. I think they're your cheapest option, though they say it could take over 6 weeks to get from there to here (ha! max is probably two or three weeks)
USPS Global Express: This one gets transferred over to Purolator, which charges a $8 CAD brokerage fee plus GST/PST.This one is my favourite - it's only a few bucks more over USPS ground, the brokerage fee is minimal, and it's EXTREMELY quick. Plus, IIRC Purolator doesn't charge you their fees at the door. Instead, they bill you a few weeks later.
FedEx: The only experience I've had with FedEx is books; they usually just get delivered, no fees. I haven't used FedEx to ship electronics over the border.
Whatever you do, do NOT use UPS Standard!!! It will end up costing WAAAY more than the savings in buying it from Canada.
